Looking for the perfect conditions to unleash your creative hot streak? A study in Nature found that artists, directors and scientists are more likely have a hot streak (a burst of high-impact works clustered together in close succession) by doing two key things.
1. Exploration: Engaging in a period of exploration, trying different genres, format, styles, ideas and methods
2. Exploitation: Focussing their creativity in one area, honing their craft and developing their expertise
Both those conditions need to be met, which means you're less likely to hit a creative gold mine if you specialise too early, but likewise you'll need to focus on one area to exploit what you've learnt.
